Genuine learning about ceremony

What is a rite?", asked the Little Prince.
"Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox,
They are what make one day different from other days,
one hour from other hours."

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Dear Colleague

Ceremony, it seems to me, is basically a means of communication - serious communication. Sometimes it is society as a whole communicating to an individual (and to itself). Sometimes it is a community honouring the achievements of one of its members. Sometimes it is two individuals saying they wish to commit their lives to each other in a very special way.

A good ceremony implants itself firmly in the human memory. It stays in an individual's subconscious and affects all future behaviour. It affects the human psyche, reinforcing essential convictions and feelings of self-worth and self-esteem. It gives individuals identity and an assurance of status in the world of their community, family, and friends.

Ceremonies are a lot more than this- they are he bridge between the arts and the people. Good ceremonies are the occasion, when, as a form of theatre. the best of music, poetry, writing, oratory, choreography and symbolism are expressed.

Ceremonies express, transmit, and reinforce important values in society.
